Commanders  Column

Summer 2018

Ken Stambaugh

So many good things have been happening at your American Legion Post.  We are an active and recognized leadership organization in Lower Paxton Township.  Together we represent veterans and their families to members of our local community.  Our Legion Family has much to be proud of.  The National  and Department Commanders Dinner that we hosted was a huge success.  Over two hundred people attended this great event held to honor these two dedicated leaders.  Over one hundred people attended our Past Commander and Senior Legionnaire Dinner.  We are makers and caretakers of the proud history of our post.  It’s right to honor those who built our organization into what it is today.

Speaking of history, I hope you’ve taken the opportunity to have dinner in our newly renovated small, smoke-free, dining room.  This make-over will allow us to showcase our posts history and current events.  Each branch of the military, plus the American Legion, has a wall dedicated to service.  This means your service to the nation and our post.  Our Post Historical Officer, Tony Dauchess has done a yeoman’s job of finding and framing pictures of our founding parade and some of our founding members.  In addition to our post art work, you are invited to bring in black framed, 5 x 7 photos of yourself in your military days or family photos.  This is your post.  It’s only fitting to have pictures of you on the walls.  Please note your name and branch of service on the back of the photo.  We will make up labels to be placed on the glass fronts.  These photo’s may be placed on the sideboard in the small dining room.  The post officers will be responsible for hanging these items in the appropriate space.

The Department of Pennsylvania American Legion’s 100th Anniversary Parade will be held at 1 o’clock on Saturday, July 14th, 2018, starting at City Island in Harrisburg.  It will proceed north on 2nd Street, turn west on North Street and proceed south on Front Street back to City Island.  Please consider walking in this parade, this is historic.  You don’t have to be a Legion Officer to participate.  Uniform is gray slacks, Legion Family polo shirt and Legion or service related cap.  Line-up is on City Island starting at 11 am.

Finally, thank you for your support over this past year as Post Commander.  Together we have strengthened the four pillars of the American Legion.  I thank you for again electing me to be your Post Commander for another year.  This upcoming year will be our 100th year anniversary.  This anniversary will be my focus.  There is only one 100th year.  We will capitalize on this opportunity by continuing to demonstrate that veterans and their families have never stopped serving their community, state and nation for the past 100 years.
